BISHOP PETER’S REFLECTIONS

Bishop Peter greatly enjoyed his visit to the Parish last weekend and thanks everyone for making him so welcome. Many people spoke to him with enthusiasm and there was a real spirit of joy at all our liturgical celebrations. He especially commended us for the way Mass is celebrated in the Parish and was particularly impressed with our Parish Music Groups and our Altar Servers. He recognised we are the largest parish in the Diocese and that Catholic life in Bletchley is vibrant and diverse. With a growing Catholic population in Milton Keynes the Diocese, in partnership with the Parish, will consider what we can do to increase capacity and serve the community more effectively as we go forward.

Having reflected on his visit Bishop Peter has made the following recommendations:

  1. 1. Prayer intentions for the sick and the departed, which we have traditionally read out during the Prayers of the Faithful (Bidding Prayers), could be offered silently. Rather than writing down someone’s name on a sheet of paper to be read out, simply recall that person’s name silently in your heart during the moment of silence in the bidding prayers. Bishop Peter is concerned that by having lists of names people might be upset if a name, for whatever reason, is missed off. There is also a distinction to be made between private intentions and public ones.

  1. 2. Notices don’t need be to given before Mass. Our minds should be focused on worship and notices can prove to be a distraction. Instead, at the beginning of Mass, we will be invited to keep a period of silence and the Hymn number announced. Any important announcements will be made after the post-communion prayer.

  1. 3. We should consider how we welcome the children back into Church when they return from Children’s Liturgy. This we will need to give some thought to and I would welcome any suggestions from parents and catechists.

Recommendations 1 & 2

will take effect this weekend.
